Joseph was born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia in 1952. His formative years were spent on a small farm, where most of the work was done manually in a traditional manner. His early experience gave him an understanding of man’s relationship with nature, and it still influences his choice of subject matter. Migrated to Australia in 1970, settling in Geelong, continuing his formal education at Deakin University gaining a diploma in Art in 1974. During his course he as introduced to Watercolour medium and began painting again. In 1978 he took up painting and has had many solo exhibitions.
Winner of the Alice Bale Watercolour Award in 1987 and 1989. At the Camberwell Rotary Show he has won a Gold Medal for Watercolour in 1988 and 1997 as well as Major Watercolour Award in 1998, 2002 and 2006. In 2001 and 2004 he won the “Best in Show” Award and Gold Medal.
